Jamsil/Sajik New Stadium, Baseball Team-Fans' Opinions from the Design Stage

On the 20th, the Busan Metropolitan City announced that it would rebuild Sajik Baseball Stadium in its current location in an open manner. The completion target is 2031. If the construction goes smoothly as planned, all other professional baseball stadiums except for Suwon KT Wiz Park, which opened in 1989, will be transformed into new stadiums built in the 21st century.카지노사이트

Starting with Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in 2014, Gocheok Sky Dome in 2015, Daegu Samsung Lions Park in 2016, and Changwon NC Park in 2019, and Daejeon's new stadium (baseball dream park) is expected to be completed in 2025. On top of that, the Blue Dragon Open of SSG is scheduled to open in 2028 and Jamsil Dome Park in 2032. Although it is not a new construction, Suwon KT Wiz Park was also remodeled in 2015.

New baseball stadiums are directly related to the popularity of professional baseball. For the 10 million spectators of this year's KBO League, it can be said that new baseball stadiums or remodeling work has been bearing fruit for the past 10 years. Starting next year, new baseball stadiums will be built in Daejeon, Incheon, Busan, and Seoul, while domed stadiums will be built in Incheon and Seoul. This is a roadmap where a renaissance in professional baseball is expected.

However, the most important part in the construction of a baseball stadium is the design stage. I observed the construction of Munhak Baseball Stadium (currently SSG Landers Field) and Ganghwa Practice Stadium (currently SSG Futures Field), and felt that design is more important than anything else.

Munhak Baseball Stadium was built with the remaining budget when Incheon City built a World Cup stadium while hosting the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup. As Soongui Baseball Stadium was an old baseball stadium that was completed in 1934, aspirations for a new baseball stadium were higher than in any other region.

Munhak Baseball Stadium, which opened in 2002, was promoted as a new major league baseball stadium. As an employee of the SK Wyverns, I had high expectations. However, I was disappointed to see Munhak Baseball Stadium. The first baseball stadium in Korea was built in 13 years following Suwon Baseball Stadium in 1989, but it was far from being dubbed "major league-class" in Korea.

One of the biggest problems is that the entrance jaw of the parking lot is so low that the away team's team bus is unable to enter the underground parking lot. As a result, the away team players are still experiencing the inconvenience of getting off in front of the underground parking lot and walking to the ballpark.

Major League Baseball stadiums in the 1990s were built as "open concourse" but those in Munhak Baseball did not. An open concourse is designed to allow spectators to watch games even when they go to the restroom or cafeteria. While the Baltimore Orioles opened their new stadium in 1992 just before the groundbreaking of the Munhak Baseball Stadium in 1994, the Incheon city government modeled after the Dodger Stadium that opened in 1962. Now there is a big board right in the center of the outfield, but the first Munhak Baseball Stadium had two electronic boards like the Dodger Stadium and it was not an open concourse structure.

In the mid-2010s, SK also worked with a sports stadium design company in the U.S. to renovate Munhak Baseball Stadium. The plan included an open concourse structure. Separately, the company planned to build a skywalk on the upper floor of outfield seats as part of remodeling the baseball stadium. The company wanted to make the skywalk located in the outfield into a dating spot where couples can watch baseball games.

Of course, neither plan has been implemented until the actual stage due to lack of budget. SK has invested in improving facilities at the baseball stadium almost every year since 2007, when it announced sports entertainment. At the same time, Munhak Baseball Stadium was highly satisfactory to the fans, who described it as "molding." Some items were not implemented due to various reasons, such as open concert or skywalk.

Construction of SSG Futures Field, formerly SK Futures Park, started in 2013 and was completed in 2015, about two years later. Due to lack of construction costs, the company faced considerable difficulties from the design stage. I did not participate in the design stage but solved several problems as I assumed the position of head of the development team while construction was underway. However, it was difficult to make fundamental changes.

Considering the case of Munhak Baseball Stadium and the 2nd-tier practice stadium, design is as important as the construction stage. The design stage of SSG's Cheongdorm has passed and the reconstruction of Jamsil Dome Stadium and Sajik Baseball Stadium is still underway, and the proportion of professional baseball teams' participation is important at this stage.

Compared to the past, professional baseball teams have been investing in the construction of new baseball stadiums over the past 10 years, reflecting a lot of opinions from baseball teams. I think Changwon NC Park is the best structure among existing baseball stadiums. The route of the away team bus entering the underground parking lot itself is excellent. Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, completed in 2014, has the disadvantage of the away team bus being exposed to the outside.

As four baseball stadiums across the country will be refurbished in the next 10 years, baseball fans have no choice but to have high expectations. I hope that the requirements of baseball fans and the team will be reflected as much as possible during the design stage.
